Braunlage and the area

Mea Vota Guesthouse set in the picturesque town of Braunlage. The Harz Mountains can be found just 480 kilometers from Utrecht (NL). This is an area of stunning natural beauty and unspoilt towns, such as Goslar (UNESCO World Heritage site) and Wernigerode. The town of Braunlage nestles in the heart of the Harz at 550 meters, on the south side of the Wurmberg. It is situated in the middle of the Nature reserve adjacent to the idyllic Harz National Park.

Braunlage is ideally situated as a starting point for all levels of walkers (including, Nordic walking), cycling and mountain biking. The Harzen Hexen Siteg” is a 97 km route which meanders through the middle of the Harz. There are 3 excellent, well marked, nordic walking routes varying in length and grade which also start from Braunlage. There are, equally, plenty of opportunities for those who prefer sailing or fi shing on one of the many beautiful reservoirs in the area. Come winter Braunlage is transformed into a small ski resort providing good facilities for snowboarding, tobogganing, langlaufi ng or iceskating on the town’s ice-rink. The Wurmburg mountain at 971 meters is ideal for all levels of skiers. There are 5 runs of varying levels and an especially designed snowboard piste. The Skiwiese has 2 easy runs, which are superb for beginners. If you prefer not to ski, you could try your hand at tobogganing along the 1.5 km toboggan run?!

Other activities in Braunlage and the surrounding area
There really are too many to mention, but we’d like to draw your attention to just a few, especially those that are good for children: 30 April the Walpurgistfest, otherwise known as the Witches festival Folklore says that Witches banned from the earth are allowed to return to earth for one night in the year for the Witches festival. This is celebrated throughout the Harz area, including Braunlage. Houses and public buildings are decorated with witches and devils. People dress up as witches and sweep up unsuspecting visitors with their broomsticks. There’s a huge party in the Kuurpark in the evening.

May The May festival (a festival of classical music) in the Kuurpark
June The town festival in Launtenthal
July Jousting in the Blankenberg
August Jazz-Kurparkfestival in Schierke.

Not forgetting, of course, the wonderful Christmas markets in November and December.

We look forward to seeing you in Braunlage.
